From Judy Downey:
The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association Chapter Presidents and Council leadership held an emergency meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 14th, following the rumors and concerns regarding an Indiana University student being transported from a fraternity house to the hospital in serious condition. At this meeting the IFC and PHA presidents agreed to impose a Social Moratorium that began on January 14th, and will be lifted when the community deems fit. This includes any kind of paired functions among fraternities and sororities. The IFC will still be patrolling during this time to ensure that the community decision is upheld. The Councils encourage that chapters use this time as an opportunity to continue to build the brotherhood and sisterhood in each chapter.
The IFC and Panhellenic Chapter Presidents and Council officers already have their Leadership Academy scheduled for next weekend, January 21st – 22nd. The leadership teams plan to reconvene at the retreat to discuss the next steps and to address the risk culture within the IFC and Panhellenic community at Indiana University.
Chief Cash, speaking for the IU Police Department has issued this statement: “This past Friday we responded to a fraternity house where a non house member needed medical assistance. He was transported to the Bloomington Hospital where, to my knowledge, he is still under their care. We are still investigating the cause, but at this time there is no sign of any foul play.”
As a result of this serious incident, Fraternity and Sorority leaders chose to show their concern by asking chapters to refrain from hosting social functions. Advisors, please confer with your chapter president to offer support, stress accountability and ensure that the chapter is cooperating with this Council Leadership request to refrain from paired social functions until further notice. This is an opportune time for the chapter to expand and strengthen their internal brotherhood and sisterhood programming.
