APC Scholarship Announced
Dear Chapter Advisors and Housing Corporation Board Officers:
To acknowledge the achievements of our local undergraduate sorority women, the Indiana University Alumnae Panhellenic Council will award a scholarship to an initiated member of an IU sorority who is a permanent resident of Monroe County. We look for women who are successfully balancing community involvement (whether sorority, IU and/or Bloomington activities) with scholastic efforts, have a vision for the future of the Greek community, meet the challenges facing women today, and are responsible for some portion of their college expenses.
Please see that the interested Monroe County area members of your sorority receive a copy of the attached application. Completed applications must be returned via email by Thursday, March 31, 2011. Winners will be announced at the 2011 Greek Awards Ceremony on April 20, 2011.
Please direct any questions concerning the awards and email completed applications to Tara Babcock at taralynnbabcock@gmail.com.
Thank you,
Tara Babcock

Social Event Moratorium starting January 14th
The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association Chapter Presidents and Council leadership held an emergency meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 14th, following the rumors and concerns regarding an Indiana University student being transported from a fraternity house to the hospital in serious condition. At this meeting the IFC and PHA presidents agreed to impose a Social Moratorium that began on January 14th, and will be lifted when the community deems fit. This includes any kind of paired functions among fraternities and sororities. The IFC will still be patrolling during this time to ensure that the community decision is upheld. The Councils encourage that chapters use this time as an opportunity to continue to build the brotherhood and sisterhood in each chapter.
The IFC and Panhellenic Chapter Presidents and Council officers already have their Leadership Academy scheduled for next weekend, January 21st – 22nd. The leadership teams plan to reconvene at the retreat to discuss the next steps and to address the risk culture within the IFC and Panhellenic community at Indiana University.
Chief Cash, speaking for the IU Police Department has issued this statement: “This past Friday we responded to a fraternity house where a non house member needed medical assistance. He was transported to the Bloomington Hospital where, to my knowledge, he is still under their care. We are still investigating the cause, but at this time there is no sign of any foul play.”
As a result of this serious incident, Fraternity and Sorority leaders chose to show their concern by asking chapters to refrain from hosting social functions. Advisors, please confer with your chapter president to offer support, stress accountability and ensure that the chapter is cooperating with this Council Leadership request to refrain from paired social functions until further notice. This is an opportune time for the chapter to expand and strengthen their internal brotherhood and sisterhood programming.

Bid Week Updates - from Judy Downey
This is an exciting week for our sorority new members and the rest of the Greek community as they welcome these women into Greek Life. We are providing a friendly reminder regarding the Panhellenic proposed activities during Bid Week. Please see the attached letter with a schedule of events for the week. We encourage your chapters to follow these guidelines and offer an enthusiastic introduction to Greek Life at Indiana University to all of our new members.
Thank you again for all that you do to assist your chapters. We depend upon your involvement and certainly appreciate the time and talents that you lend to your chapters. We look forward to another great semester and anticipate the good works, outstanding leadership and unending philanthropic service that our Greek undergraduates provide to our University community and the Bloomington area.
2011 Bid Week Request
As we begin our second semester, the IU Alumni Interfraternity Council , Alumnae Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the Panhellenic Association (PHA) are again seeking the cooperation of the IU fraternities and sororities in creating a safe and positive experience for our new sorority members during this first week of classes. Panhellenic has adopted a Bid Week schedule that was discussed and adopted by all Panhellenic chapters this past fall. The Panhellenic organizations are expected to follow the outline below and ask that the IFC chapters abide by their agreement.
Framework for the Schedule of Events:
· Monday, January 10th—Bid Night
o The potential new members will receive their bids and organizations are not allowed to incorporate alcohol into Bid Night in any fashion.
· Tuesday, January 11th—Sisterhood and Ritual Ceremonies
· Wednesday, January 12th—Social events with fraternities are permitted (for example, dinners), however, alcohol is not permitted.
· Thursday, January 13th - Saturday, January 15th--Organizations are allowed to have social functions. They are expected to follow University policies as well as those of their inter/national organizations.
· Sunday, January, 16th— Sisterhood events and alcohol is not permitted.
o Please note that there are no classes on Monday, January 17th because it is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We encourage members to use this as a day “on” and not “off” as there are a number of events occurring throughout Monday and the following week.
Panhellenic Chapters who do not follow the agreed upon schedule will be held accountable through the Panhellenic Standards Board. The intent of the schedule is to provide an experience with new members that are in line with the stated mission and principles of the organizations. Organizations found responsible through the Panhellenic Mediation Process will be provided with a sanction that will fit the violation in an effort to prevent the violation from occurring again. For example, they may be expected to submit a copy of their schedule to the Panhellenic Association the following year and also receive an administrative sanction as well depending on the violation.
· Please use common sense and good judgment and refrain from participating in any activities that could put your chapter at risk for PHA disciplinary sanctions, endanger your chapter’s image or adversely affect its longevity on the IU campus.
We urge you to refrain from organizing parties during the first three days of the week, allowing this time to provide the sorority new members with sisterhood activities, ritual ceremonies and fraternal and historical education.
Please discuss this request with your alumni advisory board, chapter leadership and members. Cooperation in implementing the PHA proposed schedule will be a great beginning for the 2011 spring semester. It will ensure that all of the new members of our sororities will enjoy a safe and values-based introduction to their IU Greek Life experience. Additionally, following this proposed Bid Week schedule will continue to earn the confidence and respect of our Dean of Students, Dr. Pete Goldsmith, and the IU Administration.
Your cooperation and leadership is greatly appreciated!
Fraternally,
Phillip Summers, President—Alumni Interfraternity Council
Mary Jane Hall, President—Alumnae Panhellenic Council
Rachelle Martino,—Incoming PHA President
Matt Edwards, President— Incoming IFC President
Maggie Wittman, Outgoing PHA President
Ryan Duerring—Outgoing IFC President
